About K’gari Summer Field Trip
K’gari Summer Field Trip is an experiential program held on World Heritage listed K’gari. Across 4 days and 3 nights artists will have the opportunity to explore the convergence of art, science, technology and the environment in place and discover the how the use of creative technologies can grow their practice.
The program is delivered by UniSC academics and guest artist Michael Cook, with the support of Butchulla/Badtjala Traditional Owners.
This program is presented by SCCA through The Refinery in partnership with the Creative Ecologies Research Cluster at UniSC and assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its principal arts investment and advisory body.

About K’gari Field Trip
The diverse ecosystems of K'gari are rich with cultural and ecological significance providing the perfect environment for exploring creative technologies, including spatial audio, XR, drone photography and locative media.
Artists will be introduced to these cutting-edge tools opening up new opportunities for creative expression and enabling application to the environment in nuanced, ethical and innovative ways.
This program includes:
Artist and academic-led workshops
3 nights accommodation at K'gari Research Station
Vegetarian catering by Nooks and Cooks
Return transfer from Rainbow Beach to K’gari Research Station
Use of technical equipment
Mentoring
About K’gari
K’gari is a UNESCO World Heritage site and part of the Great Sandy Biosphere Reserve, located in the Southeast Queensland Bioregion of eastern Australia. K’gari is the largest sand island in the world and home to a complex ecosystem of sand dunes and lakes with subtropical forests growing solely on sand.
About the facility
UniSC’s K’gari Research Station is a base to explore, research, learn and stay on the world’s largest sand island, offering participants the unique opportunity to explore K’gari’s unique ecosystems.
Access
The workshops will be physically active including night walking. A reasonable level of physical fitness is necessary. The group will visit sites that feature different and uneven terrain.

The K’gari Field Trip is by application.
Applications open 9am Friday 11 September 2026 and close Sunday 4 October 2026 (midnight end of day).
Applications must include:
2 page CV
examples of previous work provided as a PDF or a link to a website
1-2 paragraphs addressing why you’re interested in participating in the program.
Fees
The fee participate in this program is $1650 (GST incl.) per person. Successful participants will be invoiced upon notification.
Payments can be made up-front or via instalments.

What are we looking for?
Applications will be assessed based on the following criteria. You must:
Be a practising artist (min. 5-years) interested in the application of creative technologies in your work
Be open-minded to interdisciplinary experiences and new technologies
Show a demonstrated interest in natural ecologies and the environment in your practice.
